This piece is an editorial illustration for University of Pennsylvania’s food magazine ‘Penn Appetit’. The illustration is accompanied by an article about brunch and the message of the illustration is that nowadays, brunch is superficial and overshared on social media.
You will be assigned a story from Penn’s culinary magazine Penn Appetit. The illustration, if chosen, will be featured in the publication this Spring. As the illustrator you have a lot of freedom in how you choose to represent the text but I must approve of your concepts. Unfortunately the magazine only needs four illustrations for this issue of Penn Appetit so the magazine’s art director will select the pieces he feels best capture the essence of the story.
This illustration was created in the class ‘Digital Illustration’ at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in the spring of 2015. The sketches, comps and final result is all created by me in Adobe Photoshop.
The final illustration shows that I made some decisions a long the way in the process. Firstly, I chose to put more emphasis on the phone rather than the coffee, and thus I moved the phone to the center of the image and the coffee to the corner. In addition, I added a food picture to the phone and I also created the Instagram interface all by hand in Photoshop.
My illustration was chosen to be published in the magazine. The art director decided to incorporate the title of the article in the illustration, and I was kind of surprised by that. At first I thought the red type had ruined my illustration, but now I have accepted it and think it fits quite well with the illustration. I am just happy that mine got published.
